Frequently Asked Questions

Q - I have no dance experience whatsoever,
will this be a problem?

A- Not at all, our beginners classes are designed for the absolute beginner, and we start out
very slow and ease the students into moves. We've been in business since 2004,
and have taught almost 2,000 students since then, mostly all beginners.
So we pretty much have it down to a science.

Q- I'm a 34 year old woman, am I too old?
Will I feel out of place?

A- Not at all, most of our students are in their mid twenties,
and a good fraction of them are in their thirties. On average, about half of our students are also female.
And nobody ever feels out of place in our classes,
all of our instructors are top notch "people persons" and know how to make students feel at ease.
Since we do not cater to professional dancers-but rather beginners-we keep
a positive environment and don't believe in "negative reinforcement."
Our first goal is to make sure you're laughing and having FUN.
Once that is accomplished, you are able to learn without pressure.
And we only allow adults in the main classes,
the kiddies have separate classes on Saturdays.

Q- Where are you located? Is there parking?

A- Yes, we have street parking available, which most people never have a hard time getting.
Or we also are able to use a pay lot next to us for only $2/hr.  We are also located in a very nice neighborhood,
right next to a church(Lakeview/Lincoln Pk Area)
and are right by both the 'L' and busses, and just 10 minutes off of 90/94 and LSD.
We are at 1439 W Wellington Ave (off of Southport Ave).
You can see a Mapquest of our location HERE

Q- Do you guys offer HipHop Dance Classes?

A- We sure do. Currently they are held on Monday nights from 7 to 8pm.
We also will be starting our House Dance Classes again on Jan 11th.

Q- What is your current class schedule?
Do you have a schedule available after the next term?
I don't know if I can make the next round.

A- Our current class schedule is listed below. New class sessions start every 6 weeks.

Our next full 6 week session starts the week of Jan 5th, 2009.
if you don't see the future dates you're looking for,
shoot us an email at info@breakdancechicago.com and ask us,
or you can just fill out the comment form at the bottom of this page.
We do start new classes every 6 weeks.
Also please note that the Intro To Break Classes all run on the same lesson plan each week.

Currently the next six week term of classes is set to begin the week of Jan 5th.

    Q- What is Breakfittm?

A- The BreakFittm class is our very own exclusive, trademarked Breakdance Fitness Class.
It's a basic cardio class designed to go side by side with the normal Intro To Break Class,
and it utilizes basic break steps alongside common cardio workout exercises.
We were the first studio in the world to come up with this program, and it is quickly becoming all the rage!

Q- What will we be learning in the classes?

A- The Intro to Break Class is a fundamentals class,
meaning you'll be learning the basic fundamentals of bboying.
We also teach the importance of understanding body movement, and the science behind it, from a physics point of view.
So even just your normal dancing will greatly improve as you begin to
understand the mechanics of body movement and momentum.

The Five Fundamentals of bboying that are covered are:

  • Uprocking and Toprocking - The dance we do before we get on the ground, all done on our feet standing up.

  • Downrocking and the Six Step - This is the basic core footwork that you will learn on the ground,
the steps of the Six Step will take your legs and feet stepping in a circle around your body.

  • Freezes/Stalls/Poses - A freeze, stall, or pose, is what you will do usually during your downrock or after a powermove,
which will have your body come to a complete stop for a brief moment,
in a difficult seeming position (but we make it easy for you!).
Some common freezes you will be learning include the Baby Freeze and Turtle Freeze.

  • Powermoves - These moves consist of anything that takes usually involves spinning, pushing,
pressing or kicking. An example of some powermoves would be a windmill, headspin, or backspin.
You will learn a little bit of each in the class.

  • Flow - Flow isn't a move, but rather an understanding of how to string all of the moves
and footwork together seamlessly. We show you how to make everything connect,
we don't just teach you a bunch of isolated moves.

  • Q- What will I learn in the hip-hop dance class?

A- The hip-hop class is done all on your feet, standing up.
You will be taking choreography from the instructor, and build up a series of
"eight-counts" throughout the class, until you get to a final routine towards the end of class.
Each day of each class has a brand new routine,
never the same routine twice! The instructor (Al Tamper) is also a member of
the world famous dance troupe, "Culture Shock." He has performed all throughout the country
and his choreography is REAL HIPHOP dancing, not some other form of dance
    masquerading as hip-hop dance.

Q- Can I start the second week?

A- Yes, the Thursday of Week 2 is the last day you can sign up.
We review everything we did week 1 anyway, so you'll be fine.
And we can also either pro-rate you or you can just make up any missed classes another day.

Q- I'm not sure about this, is there a way I can just check out the classes?

A- Absolutely, we have a try before you buy policy, so you can come out and
even participate in the first class with no obligation, and if it's not for you,
walk away and pay nothing. You have nothing to lose.

Q- Do You Have Kids Classes?
My son/daughter is 8 years old, is this too young?

A- The next kids class scheduled is starting Saturday Jan 10th, 2009! Sign up below! The main classes held on weeknights are for adults only.
And if you wanted to enroll your child
in private one on one instruction, ask us for details.  You can also have your own private
class set up, all we need is a minimum of 5 students
to keep a class open, and that way you'd pay the standard rate.

    Q- Can I come twice a week?

A- YES! We offer different types of class packages where you can mix and match
and choose how much or how little you want to come.
We usually offer up to 7 classes a week, you can come to all of them if you wanted to!

Q- Do you offer one on ones or private classes?

A- Yes, either at our studio or a location of your choice.  Ask us for rates and details.

Q- Are you guys available for workshops and/or performances or birthday parties?

A- Yes, email us with the specifics on what you would like, and we will get back to you with a quote.
You can also click on our MEDIA page and see stuff we've done and even download our presskit if you want.

Q- Do you guys offer gift certificates?

A- Yes, available in any denomination. Email us for more info.

Q- Is there a more advanced class?

A- Yes, we offer a level 2 class which you can take immediately after or
even as you're taking level 1. There is no pre-requisite for taking level 2.
Many students will get a standard package and take both classes,
which is a way to get more exposure to different moves.

Q- Do you guys allow drop-ins or have drop-in rates?

A- Because our classes are on a progressive lesson plan, we do not allow drop ins.
The program is designed to build upon itself, so having random
students drop in just doesn't work.

Q- What happens if I miss a week?

A- Although every week is on the same lesson plan, if you miss an entire week,
you may make up any missed classes the following week.
Our policy is that we don't believe in students "forfeiting" classes.
We will work around you in most cases and try to catch you up as best we can.

Q- How much does it cost?
    What are your rates/prices?

A- We offer different types of packages to mix and match the different classes. Class terms and packages are for six weeks.
    Our current package options are:
  • $95.00 - Basic Package (6 Classes Total)
  • $139.00 - Standard Package (12 Classes Total)
  • $175.00 - Premium Package (18 Classes Total)
  • $199.00 - Unlimited Package (Unlimited Classes)

  • All prices include all fees and sales tax.
We take all forms of payment: cash, check, and credit/debit cards, and PayPal.
If you pre-register over the phone you automatically save 10%.
And we usually offer discounted special rates in our newsletters,
where you can save even more than that during special promotions we run (up to 33%!)
